perf

Trying out chrome on my mac mini again, and it seems a *lot* faster. Did recent versions of it get a major speed bump or something? Various little benchmarks I had like scrolling in Google Reader seem a lot better in the latest 10.something version. The one thing that always strikes me when I use […]

holy

Randomly switched to my mac, and saw my long running Safari using 2.64GB real mem. Even after closing all the tabs, still saw 2.15GB. Yay for memory leaks. Or crazy caching. Whatever it is, this machine only has 4GB mem, so something should notice and free some shit.

eject

I shouldn’t have to ask this, but what is the fastest way to eject a removable disk in Windows 7? So far I’ve been finding an explorer window, then right clicking on the drive, and picking eject. Why is this three difficult clicks? What’s the one thing that you know is going to happen with […]

*giggle*

Boehner should just change the spelling of his name. I can’t read any article about politics without hearing the adolescent in myself constantly giggle. I wonder if this spelling gives him more name recognition. Someone should try running as “John Penis”, but be like, “oh, it’s pronounced like pay-knee”. I’d probably vote for that if I saw […]

MvsP

More Mac vs PC thoughts.  I kinda kick myself for continuing to think about this, and yet, I think the current swing in the Mac vs PC war is really interesting to study, even if it’s not just for my personal purchasing decisions. I took a quick stab at calculating “time lost” on a PC […]

representation without taxation

The whole thing about General Electric not paying any US taxes is amazing, but I’m not surprised. The Citizens United supreme court case, on the other hand, was a little bit more surprising. But I think what bothers me the most is the implication of the combination of the two. History class taught me the […]

docking

random thought #2. Paradoxically, docking and undocking on my x201 might actually be slower than doing the 3 cable dance on the macbook pro. At “dock” time, OSX is a bit faster about reconfiguring the display and finding the mouse and keyboard I just plugged in, even if plugging them in took a bit longer. […]

Becoming Open Enough

Random thought of the day #1 The whole iOS vs Android thing has taught the world many lessons, but one I noticed today was a simple one: It’s easier to become more open than less open. Like I’ve written before, companies have the greatest positive impact on the world when they arrive at “open enough”. […]
