After ranting about backup strategies, I went out and bought a Seagate Expansion external 3TB USB 3.0 drive. Simple enough right? Turns out the damn thing doesn’t wake up when you resume the computer from sleep.

Googling around shows other users with the same problem. Interestingly, it appears that users of other brands of external drives have the issues too, and the only common thread I can find is that they’re all USB 3.0 drives. Which leads me to speculate that there’s something about the controllers that these drives are using that has issues, and Win 8 / osx haven’t caught on yet.

In any case, my drive is going back, and I’ll probably just put together another external with some older, trusty usb 2 product.

I hate computers.
