Found a co-worker with a Keytronic keyboard today, and surprisingly, it feels quite nice. I pulled off the key cap to see what kind of switch it was, and saw that it was a membrane switch.. hmm.. time to dig a little deeper..
Then, on their website, I found these tidbits:

Ergo Technology has 5 different levels of force. From 35 grams to 80 grams – that correspond to the strength of the finger that touches the keys.

and

High quality membrane switch
Keys withstand over 30 million keystrokes

I guess not all rubber dome switches are made the same. 30 million strokes is on the same level as Cherry mechanical switches. Also on the plus side, these keyboards only cost $20-$30. I guess I’ll have to add one to my collection at some point.
Update: Apparently the above specs don’t apply to all of their products. It seems that only the Exxxx products come with the good switches with the long lifetimes. I guess E is for ergo.
