While it is a fine keyboard, I’ve decided to return the Avant Prime for several reasons:
- It doesn’t work well with my kvm switch at work. While this isn’t totally the keyboard’s fault, it makes it much less useful to me.
- It doesn’t work well through my ps/2-to-usb converter so using it at home on my powerbook is also suboptimal.
- Its standard layout makes my wrists hurt after a long usage at work.
That won’t stop me from recommending it to anyone who’s interested in a good mechanical keyboard. It’s definitely the best one I’ve tried so far. I guess my hands just aren’t compatible with it.
I’ll probably be concentrating on ergonomic keyboard reviews from now. I’ll still review the cheaper standard layout keyboards, but the $100+ may be out of my range for now, unless my ad revenue really starts to pick up 😉 . I hope that last statement doesn’t count as encouraging my users to click on ads, as the Google AdSense policy prohibits ;-P.
Next up will probably be the MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Since I seem to always end up falling back to the Natural Elite, it can’t be too far from what I want right? And because it’s the same company, it should at least be a strict improvement? We’ll see I guess.
