Finally made it over to Wolf Camera on 16th street and got one of these suckers. When I inquired about the newer d70s, I was told that they wouldn’t sell them in store until all the d70’s had sold, though I could order one if I wanted.
I wouldn’t recommend going to that wolf camera. The representative clearly did not understand that I had done a lot of homework, nor that I knew exactly what I wanted. It was annoying that I couldn’t at least see the d70s, but the price difference between the two (200$) does not justify the new features in the d70s for me (bigger LCD, cable release, a better battery).
A few things that the guy there did not know, and proceed to tell me something wrong: the d70s has the pop-up flash mounted differently, so that it covers a wider angle. He also didn’t know about the improved battery in the d70s (though now that I think about it.. can’t I just stick the new battery in a d70 and get the same result?) He also claimed that the d70 he was selling me had updated firmware to the 2.0 version that matches many of the d70s features. He was wrong there too, as I soon discovered. Then he tried to sell me a 1GB UltraII flash card for 139.00. I promptly declined and went straight to Costco to get the same card for 89.00 (I’m sure I could have done better online).
Anyhow, I don’t need to go into a store and have a guy that tries to insist that he knows more than I do (unless he does, of course). This guy obviously didn’t know about all the products he was selling, and he came up with all kinds of salesman like explanations for stuff (oh, its a DX so its specifically made for digital sensors, yadda yadda, if i’m debating with him the finer points of the difference between the d70 and d70s, one would think I know what the DX stands for)
Anyways, enough of that. Here’s some first round pictures:
