Now that I (hopefully) have a keyboard to use at work that I’m happy with, now to find one for home. The requirements may be slightly different here. For one thing, quieter is probably better. Also, looks matter here more, since in the near future, it’s going to be sitting atop my beautiful new desk. Finally, ideally, it would be mac compatible, with volume and eject keys.
There seem to be several approaches to this:

  • Buy a USB 104-key PC keyboard, then use software to remap the alt/windows keys to the right mac keys.
  • Choose from one of the existing mac keyboards, aside from the Tactile Pro and the IceKey
  • Get a mac keyboard and modify it to taste. The most promising starting point seems to be to get the SMK-88 mac mini keyboard and then replace the switches with the non-linear Cherry switches that I like.

For now, I’ve ordered the Keytronic E03600 since it’s USB and was only $30 with tax and shipping. That’s even cheaper than a tank of gas these days.
