I’m sure a lot of people know about this one already, but I noticed that if you right click on a song in iTunes, it gives you an option that says “Convert selection to …” where “…” is whatever you have your current import encoding settings (in preferences->advanced on a mac) set to.
It makes things like “I want to rip this cd as Apple Lossless, make a copy later, and then convert my files to 256kbps AAC” possible.
Seems also to work for purchased music.. doesn’t that mean converting to WAV and back is made pretty easy?

I find it mildly annoying that if you right click on an MP3, it lets you “Convert to MP3”, which is never what I want. It’s doubly annoying since it’s not easy to tell the type of the file(s) I’m right clicking from the UI.

Yea converting from MP3 to MP3 is kind of brain dead. Actually, what I really want is different encoding profiles that are selectable. I encode lossless or AAC depending sometimes on whether I already own a CD or not, and its a pain to keep having to go the preferences to switch back and forth.
As for not knowing what kind of filetype you have, you can add a “Kind” column to the default set of columns. I have it added as the very right column.. hidden most of the time, but useful for sorting when you need it.
