I’ve done several notebook hard drive transplants in the past, they all turn out to be not so bad, as long as you have a visual reference of how to take the thing apart in the first place.
The Hitachi 7K100 100GB 7200rpm drive can be had for about $160. From experimenting with Aperture running with a library off of the external drive, I get the feeling that a faster main drive would provide a huge benefit, especially when the swap memory starts going crazy (i.e. running/quitting Aperture or Entourage).
I’m sure doing the update myself will void the Apple warranty. But getting the Apple care extension then asking them to do it costs way more than $160.
Does AppleCare still cover the rest of the machine even if you replace the hard drive yourself?
What to do, what to do..
