OS X needs RAM

I’ve read it many other place before, but now I see what people mean. The OS X experience for me is significantly improved with 1.5GB of RAM instead of 512mb. I got a 1 gig kingmax stick from newegg for

A sound re-routing utility

Found the little app called “SoundSource” which sits in the menu bar and lets you quickly choose the output device for sound. The other useful thing it does is it can re-route system-beeps and notifications differently from music. This keeps your room from booming with swooshes from ichat and dings from mail.app.

ingenious

My new linksys router was about to go back to frys when I discovered that OS X has a network setting called “DHCP plus manual address” in which you can specify just the IP address that you want, but get all the rest of the info from the DHCP. It seems like a violation of […]

Aiyaiyai

What a day. My new notebook is obsoleted, just like that. Actually, not really. I’m sure Steve Jobs and Apple is not dumb enough to abandon its installed base of PPC customers. It would have been nice if it had happened a few years earlier though.. then I really wouldn’t have had to venture over […]

Fun with Gmail POP

So I finally decided to try to wean myself off the gmail interface and use mail.app instead. Mail.app is a fantastically written program, and its smart folders are so fast even for thousands of messages. I successfully downloaded all my 100megs of gmail email to my powerbook so far. Everything seems to work alright except […]

Planned Obsolesense

c|net is running an article claiming that Apple is moving to Intel chips… If it’s really true, what does it mean about my brand new laptop? Does it mean in less than 2 years, nobody will be writing new apps for it? I can’t imagine most development houses are going to like developing for two […]

A few disappointments

iPhoto continues to be really slow. It eats a lot of memory, so much so that other programs take a hit. It even makes ichat unbearable. The OS X scheduler is a bit odd. Its very aggressive at giving priority programs receiving user input. On the other hand, it is also very aggressive about removing […]

Fry’s is evil.

That large electronics store known as Fry’s is the source of all evil in the world. It is a death trap for impulse or impatient buyers. I managed to purchase a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router there, pretty much on a whim, after I decided that my current wireless networking solution (which involved using Windows’ Internet […]

Quite nice indeed

2nd post! Well.. i haven’t gotten around to installing many 3rd party apps yet. I feel like there is a whole bunch of stuff to get used to just with the preloaded iLife and etc. There are a few things that I’m still getting used to. The one biggest one has to be the fact […]
