Crashing servers

Somehow my webserver crashed.. I think the host OS crashed, and took the guest down with it. When I logged into the host today, the uptime was only 20 hours or so. I took the opportunity to move the webserver VM that this site is hosted on over to my windows box. Linux host to […]

Cell phone radiation

Came across this page this morning: Radiation measurements for cell phones on the market. The federal requirement says you have to stay under 1.6, mine is a 1.21. Probably a good thing to look at before buying my next phone. Although, does it mean if you have less radiation then you also get worse reception?

SELinux Symposium

So I’m off to Maryland for the SELinux Symposium. A bunch of HP, IBM, Redhat, and NSA guys will be there as well. Should be pretty interesting, though I’m not looking forward to the flight (being that I just made the return trip very recently). But I guess everyone’s over there huh. (Redhat in NC, […]

The new Powerbook scrolling

Finally got a chance to play with the new powerbooks two-fingered scrolling feature. Feels like it works pretty well, and seems so obvious in hind sight. I’m always the most excited about simple, seemingly obvious improvements like these. They are few and far between in the computer world, and Apple probably lays claim to a […]

Back to KDE

Shortly after declaring that I’m back on FVWM, now I’m back on KDE. FVWM is just too annoying to build up the configuration that you want (and the default configuration is very very far from what I want). At least KDE attempts to put a GUI around it. Its really amazing just how much more […]

Sony DSC-P150

Not much time to write these days.. and it doesn’t really seem like I have an audience anyways. How sad. Bought a DSC-P150 compact 7.2 megapixel camera. Pretty impressed with it so far. This is step 1 in my plan to get rid of the canon g3, and have one take anywhere camera and one […]

Fvwm

I’ve started using FVWM plus gnome at work. Its a bit of a pain in the ass to get gnome to run a separate window manager cleanly, but it does seem to work now. One annoying bug that people do seem to know about is that if you have multiple gnome panels, then the come […]

More projector candidates

So the InFocus X1/Screenplay 4800, or the NEC VT470. The NEC seems to get great reviews, and its brightness makes it much more useful in conditions with somewhat more ambient light. Its a few hundred more though.. in the rage of a nikon d70 which I also have to get… I’m still a little trigger […]

So close…

So I borrowed a no-brand video to VGA scan converter from a friend. It looked like it was going to work ok, and so I hooked it all up, when I discovered that it’s vga output port has a male VGA port? What the heck? no video card I’ve seen has ever had a male […]
